As a Professional Organizer, I spend much of my time working inside people’s private spaces. It is a privilege to be invited into a home, and I always assure my clients that everything we come across will be held in strictest confidence and without judgment of any kind.
I had a funny experience a while back that proves my point. I was working with a client in her bedroom, sorting out the contents of drawers and piles around the room. As is typical, we were grouping like items together so that we could decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to carry to another room in the house.
At one point, I began tackling a pile of the husband’s clothes that were on the floor on his side of the bed. (For the sake of the story, I will call the husband Joe.) I was organizing Joe’s pile into shorts, shirts, socks, etc. when I came upon a pair of hot pink panties. I looked up at the wife and said, “I don’t think these are Joe’s! Where do you want me to put these?” Either my client hadn’t heard me, or was concentrating on something else, because rather than respond, she just looked up at me and stared.
All of a sudden, I had a moment of panic thinking that maybe I had made an incorrect assumption. I quickly said, “But of course, if they are Joe’s, I will just start a new pile and move right along!” At this point, my client realized what I had been talking about and burst out laughing. Needless to say, I heaved a sigh of relief. We had a good laugh together, and I said, “You see, I mean it when I say ‘no judgment’!”
People tell me all the time, “Oh, you’d be shocked if you saw the inside of my home!” But the truth is, I wouldn’t. Life is full of tragedies, struggles, celebrations and surprises, all of which create complexity and can result in disorder. I am focused on bringing relief and having fun, not criticizing or condemning. If you’ve been letting shame or embarrassment keep you from seeking needed help, I encourage you to take the first step and contact a Professional Organizer near you (you can find one here.) Not only will you feel great when the project is finished, you might even have a good laugh in the process!
Have you ever thought your space was too messy for anyone to see?
